About
Alyona Movko-Mägi is an Estonia-based artist working across moving image, light, and spatial storytelling, with a practice shaped by years of live visuals for theatre, opera, concerts, and large-scale public events. She holds two Master’s degrees from the Estonian Academy of Arts (Contemporary Art and Craft Studies) and teaches there, bringing a studio-to-stage mindset into both her artwork and pedagogy. In her work, the image behaves less like a flat surface and more like an environment: something that surrounds, breathes, and carries time.
Her background in performance contexts has trained her attention to rhythm, cues, tension, and atmosphere—how a scene can be built from light, grain, pacing, and silence. That sensibility translates naturally into her digital editions and NFT works, which often feel like compact “stage worlds”: cinematic fragments with their own physics, mood, and internal logic. She treats memory as a material, building visual languages that move between the visceral and the synthetic—between the body and the interface, the intimate and the monumental.
Alongside digital practice, she has a deep relationship with tactile processes and heritage-driven materials, moving through textiles (especially knitting), glass, and analogue photography. This material intelligence feeds back into her digital work: textures are never just decorative; they act like evidence—traces of touch, labor, weathering, and lived time. Her recent explorations include immersive and interactive formats, where the viewer’s presence and movement become part of the image’s behaviour.
Movko-Mägi’s work has been presented in major Estonian art contexts and performance venues, and she has been recognized for her video practice, including receiving Video Artist of the Year (Estonian Music Awards). Across mediums, her aim stays consistent: to make images that don’t merely represent experience, but produce it—works you can return to and feel changing, as if they remember you back.
